2021 Plein Air Painting Competition

Theme: Burlington Parks
Burlington maintains over 200 acres of parks throughout the community. The signature parks include Dankwardt Park, which provides an 18-hole disc golf course, municipal pool, off-leash dog park, playgrounds, ball fields, and a variety of other amenities; and the adjacent Crapo Park includes an arboretum, Lake Starker, walking paths, and wonderful views of the Mississippi River from high above the bluff. Snake Alley, Riverside Park, and the many other parks and sites in the community are also must visit destinations. Artwork must be done outdoors, en plein air, during the event. All paint and drawing mediums are accepted. There are no size limits on canvas and paper. A map will be provided. This event is rain or shine.
Early Registration: $30 for both days, $20 for 1 day
Day of Registration: $35 for both days, $25 for 1 day
Check-in is between 8:00 - 10:00 am at the Art Center of Burlington, 301 Jefferson Street on Saturday and Sunday. Artists are not required to participate each day. Canvases and/or paper must be stamped at check-in. Stamp must be visible at judging or access provided if asked by judge. Complimentary artist packets will be provided and include daily instructions, maps of suggested site locations and other goodies.
Artists are limited to submitting 2 pieces for judging. Only works hand-delivered and hung by 4:00 pm Sunday will be displayed and eligible for judging. Artists are encouraged to drop off artwork anytime before this time. All canvases must have a picture wire system for hanging. No sawtooth hangers, D-Rings preferred. All art done on paper should be protected under plexi/glass and framed. Artists are welcome to use the Art Center classroom to put their pieces together. The utmost care will be taken in the handling of artwork, we assume no responsibility for loss or damage to any artwork.
Judging will take place on Sunday from 4-5pm.
This year, there will be a reception with live music and our Gallery Lounge will be open serving beer and wine. Each painter will receive one free drink ticket. This event is open to the public and will encourage people to meet the artists and buy the artwork from the competition.
First Place: $250
Second Place: $150
Third Place: $50
Honorable Mention: 1 Year Individual Membership to Art Center of Burlington
Artwork from the event will be exhibited in our Mini Gallery September 19-October 7. The Art Center of Burlington will be responsible for all sales of the artwork. A sales commission (15% commission of Art Center Members or 25% commission of Non-Members) will be taken for any sales. Artists will be mailed checks for any sold pieces in mid-October.
Burlington has a wonderful variety of restaurants but if you want to take the guesswork out of where to grab lunch from then choose our box lunch option! These box lunches will be catered from the Beancounter and available to pick up at the Art Center on both Saturday and Sunday. You can take advantage of our AC and eat lunch inside even! Prices include tax.
Organic mixed greens, apples, shredded chicken, bacon, fall sliced walnuts, feta cheese, and maple vinaigrette
Smoked ham warmed with melted provolone cheese, mixed greens, tomatoes, and a spicy mustard on a croissant. Served with a side of baked cinnamon apples.
Avocado smash with slow roasted chicken, black bean pico de gallo, mixed greens, tortilla strips, queso fresco cheese, spicy sour cream, inside of a spinach wrap. Served with a side of tortilla chips.
Hummus, cucumber, tomato, mixed greens, red onion, peppers, and avocado served on an everything bagel. Served with fresh seasonal fruit.
